Stonewashing, and what we mean by softness
Many linens are chemically softened with silicone-based finishes. They feel wonderful in the store and ordinary after a few washes, once the coating has gone down the drain.
Stonewashing is mechanical. The fabric is tumbled with natural stones so the fibers relax physically. Nothing is added, and the softness stays because it is in the fabric itself.
Our sampling rounds have focused on finding the right balance: enough washing to relax the fabric, not so much that it loses body. We think we are close, and the journal will say when we are sure.
